It chose me really! I started doing a degree in physics but wanted to do something more practical and ended up doing engineering. At the same time I was studying marine biology so I ended up in a perfect position to start working at sea as a scientist. Once I was at sea I quickly became attracted to the buzz (noise, smells and machinery) of the engine room and just started helping out…Before long I was offered a job as a ships engineer and everything else just happened from there on!

I chose to be an engineer because I loved maths in school and engineering seemed to be a really interesting job that involves maths.

It chose me really! When I first went to sea I fell in love with the engine room. It was so exciting seeing all the machines working and I just loved problem solving and being able to help people in a really practical way (by keeping the ship sailing!)

As my career developed I found that I was becoming better and better at solving problems with the knowledge I had learned and seen. Working with other engineers gave more ideas of how to plan so we didn’t generate problems in the future. Then I decided I wanted to become a professional engineer which meant i had to be judged by other more senior engineers.
