      It really depends on the job. At sea you work any hours that you need to, although there are rules about how much rest you have to take (to make sure that you don’t get too tired and start making mistakes).

      On the Seismic ships I worked 12hour shifts (although it was usually longer).

      On the tall ships I worked 0800-1800hrs, then did final checks at 2200hrs. Every other night I would be on “duty” so if there were any alarms or the Captain needed ,e to alter the engines I would have to get up in the night (usually still in my PJs!) to fix the problem. But, when I was off the ship I was completely free to travel or do whatever I wanted.
